Direct marketing advertising is done through direct mail, email, telemarketing , broadcast faxing, voicemail marketing, working with coupons, direct response television marketing, direct selling and integrated campaigns.

These are very popular to the direct marketing because the positive results can be measured directly. Direct marketing is quite often criticized because of the direct marketing generating unwanted soliciting. These are considered through the snail mail as junk mail, admail, or even bulk mail and then the unwanted mail through email is considered spam.

There is a lot of controversy because of all the direct marketing because people are getting tired of the unwanted junk mail and spam. People are saying that direct marketing is invading their privacy and harming the environment by all the excess paper mailed out and put into the trash.

The junk mail may consist of catalogs, free trial CDs, advertising circulars, pre-approved credit card applications, and other merchandising invitations that the postal service is bringing to us and leaving in our mailboxes. They are a threat to the environment because of all this excess paper that is being just tossed away. These junk mails come about from businesses using the direct marketing to mail out many advertisements at once and that is called bulk mailing, they get our addresses from phone books, buying mailing lists, etc.

Broadcast faxing is not too common any longer because laws have made it illegal, but voicemail marketing is a less expensive type of direct marketing. It only consists of calling and leaving messages on your personal voice mailboxes or your business voicemail. This is called “voice spam” and laws have been passed to protect the consumers from these unwanted solicitations also.

Direct response television is a famous form of direct marketing. This direct marketing is used in the thirty second commercials that you see on television during a show you are watching or an infomercial that it being aired on television. They are considered direct response because you have to make a phone call or visit a website for a response.

Then there is direct marketing is direct selling which is finding the customers and trying to sell your product face to face, for example, Avon, Tupperware, etc.

Direct marketing has offered us as consumers the opportunity to use “opt out” lists. The “opt out” lists enable us to check that we do not want to receive emails from certain advertisers; therefore we are put on these “opt out” lists and we are not supposed to receive any of these unwanted solicitations from this advertiser in the direct marketing. There is an address to call that you can “opt out” of receiving junk mail also. You have to send in a request to that address requesting to be removed from their mailing lists.

You can also “opt out” of unwanted solicitations from direct marketing on the telephone the same way. There is a number to call that you can request that your telephone number be removed from their call lists on that direct marketing.
